Faculty
Students are required to complete .5 unit of health education. Taught as part of the physical education class in Grades 9 through 12, health education focuses on personal wellness, including making good choices, avoiding unhealthy social behavior and using community health resources.
High school students must earn 1.5 units over eight semesters in physical education. Students in Grades 9 through 12 participate in a variety of activities in physical education. These may include team sports or individual fitness activities. The goal is to help students develop fitness habits that will become part of their lifelong daily routine.
COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCATION This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy life choices to promote personal wellness. The curriculum includes human growth and development, STD's, HIV and pregnancy prevention, parenthood, family living, personal well-being education, nutrition, physical activity, community health issues and substance use prevention (ATODA). Depending on staffing some courses include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
CREATIVE MOVEMENT 1 This course is designed for boys and girls and will focus on beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels of dance with emphasis on body impelling movements. Floor patterns, rhythmic problems, and solving of creative movement problems will be stressed.
AEROBIC DANCE This is a dance exercise class. Emphasis is on fitness through exercise performed to music. Dance steps and routines are combined with exercises for an extended workout. Students are encourage to develop personal work-out programs.
FIT FOR LIFE 1 This course is designed for 10th grade classes. This is the second of the core PE courses in MPS. Depending on individual school facilities/staffing, these coeducational courses emphasize health related fitness. At the conclusion of the subject offerings, students will have experienced a wide variety of fitness activities that they will be able to replicate on their own. Emphasis is on activities that has students who are moderately to vigorously active for 60% of the class time. Students will have an understanding of their own fitness level, how to assess their fitness and how to improve their health related fitness.
FIT FOR LIFE 2 This course is designed for 10th grade classes. This is the second of the core PE courses in MPS. Depending on individual school facilities/staffing, these coeducational courses emphasize health related fitness.
