Faculty

The Special Services Department functions to provide the least restrictive environment for all students enrolled. All Exceptional Education students are expected to participate in their chosen art specialty.Students are closely monitored in their mainstream classes and provided with tutorial assistance to ascertain success in these courses. The goal of the program is to foster personal as well as academic growth and confidence in every student.

DIRECTED STUDY/LEARNING STRATEGY This class is designed to provide academic support for inclusion students. The students can utilize this resource hour to learn study skills, receive test accommodations, and apply strategies to complete assignments, research papers and projects.

SKILL STREAMING
This course is designed to offer resource support to students enrolled in regular education classes. Students will learn organizational and study skills as well as receive assistance with their class work. Depending on individual student need, the Skill Streaming course may provide support and extended time for test taking, reading and writing support for classroom assignments, and enrichment of classroom content.

CITIZENSHIP
This course is designed to familiarize students with the role of government, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the world of work, and services available in the community. Students will learn how to handle personal finances, fill out job applications, find housing, and obtain insurance.

U.S. HISTORY
This course is designed to increase the student¿s knowledge of the basic ideas and events leading up to the founding of the United States, and the resulting history through the Viet Nam War. Students will learn about historical events that occurred in various time frames and be able to demonstrate an understanding of major historical figures, events and ideas.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY
This course is designed to equip students to be able to demonstrate world map skills including locating and naming countries, major bodies of water, major land forms, and major world cities. Students will learn to identify and describe various world climates as well as the importance of natural resources to nations around the globe.

WORLD HISTORY
This course is designed to teach students basic map skills and provide an overview of world geography, history, cultures, and significant historical events. Students will also explore their own family structure.

ON THE JOB (2-3 HOURS)
This program offers students who have demonstrated appropriate work related behaviors the opportunity to enter the job market. Student's receive job coaching and other support from classroom teachers and their Transition Coordinators and receive high school credit and a paid stipend.

WORK TRAINING/PGRM (2-3 HRS) CATP
-This program offers high school students the opportunity to be assessed in a community work setting. Students explore various careers and learn appropriate work behaviors while working alongside employees of businesses

LANGUAGE! A
This course uses a comprehensive literacy curriculum that is specifically designed to accelerate the reading and writing development of students who have been identified through the WKCE-CRT, IEP needs, and placement test scores. This curriculum provides 90 minutes of daily, systematic and explicit instruction. This program will help students learn the building blocks of language, teach students to use sound-spelling correspondence to fluently read and write, develop word meaning, increase understanding of sentence parts and patterns, teach comprehension skills and develop communication skills through speaking and writing activities. The teaching format for each level is the same but each level utilizes completely different materials and content. Course credit counts towards elective credit but does not satisfy district diploma requirement for specific subject area without an IEP meeting.

LANGUAGE! B
This course uses a comprehensive literacy curriculum that is specifically designed to accelerate the reading and writing development of students who have been identified through the WKCE-CRT, IEP needs, and placement test scores. VOCATIONAL READING 9
This introductory course is designed to provide students with the reading skills which will address basic vocational/career vocabulary.

ENGLISH 9
This course is designed to teach students to build reading and writingstrategies while critically evaluating literature and applying knowledge ofstory structure.

VOCATIONAL ENGLISH
This course is designed to teach students to build strategies in reading and writing in real-life situations and apply vocational/career related vocabulary. Students will learn the basics of resume building and will take an interest inventory to determine individual preferences.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
This course is designed to teach students effective communication strategies while applying interpersonal skills in a performance-based setting.
CONSUMER ENGLISH This course is designed to familiarize students with the basic vocabulary necessary for functioning effectively as consumers in every day personal and vocational life.

ALGEBRA
In this set of courses, students will study the properties of numbers, the use of variables, methods of solving equations, and problem solving. Students will develop an understanding to investigate questions related to rational numbers, signed number work, order of operations, variable representations, simplifying rational expressions, setting up and solving linear, exponential and quadratic equations, reading and interpreting information from a coordinate graph, and setting up coordinate graphs representing linear, exponential, and quadratic functions.

FUNCTIONAL MATH 1
This class is designed to use everyday math in a real world context to promote independence. The content will include math applications in health, sports, recipes, money, travel and daily living.

MATHEMATICS GRADE 9
This course reinforces fundamental math skills while introducing new skills required in future classes. Students will be expected to solve problems and collect, represent, interpret, and evaluate data using a variety of techniques and methods.

VOCATIONAL MATHEMATICS
In this course, students will use geometric shapes, both two and three dimensional, and their properties to make sense of situations involving data, change, and chance. Many concepts introduced will be integrated and applied within the curriculum of the technology courses within student academies.

CONSUMER MATHEMATICS
This course is designed to teach students about real-life skills related to money, time, and work. Students will learn about financial vocabulary, checking and savings accounts, making and counting change, credit, and money skills required for shopping.

APPLIED MATHEMATICS
This class covers many topics concerning real life situations. The students will learn mortgage, cost of living, credit card usage, inflation and other varying money matters.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
An individualized curriculum based on capacities of students who do not benefit from general physical education activities. Exercises will be individually prescribed. The course includes a diversified program of developmental activities tailored to the individual needs of the students. Class size should correspond to the students' Special Education classroom placement and/or students' IEPs.

FUNCTIONAL SCIENCE 1
This year long course is designed to provide students with the basic understanding of living organisms, ranging from micro-organisms to large plants and animals.

FUNCTIONAL SCIENCE 2
This year long course is designed to provide students with the basic understandings of the composition of matter, changes in matter, and the laws regulating these changes.

HEALTH
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy life choices to promote personal wellness. The curriculum includes human growth and development, STD's, HIV and pregnancy prevention, parenthood, family living, personal well-being education, nutrition, physical activity, community health issues and substance use prevention (ATODA).

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
In this self-contained science course, students will be exposed to virtually the same content and competencies as the Integrated Science (9a and 9b) classes. The delivery and level of exposure to this content will vary and be modified according to the special education needs of the students in the class.
