MHSA / CLC EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES & OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
ACT-SO / Mr. Roberts
Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific, Olympics
This is a scholarship opportunity for African-American students in the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences. Students compete locally for Olympic-style medals. Local winners advance to the national competition to compete for cash scholarships. www.actso.org/actso_whatis.html
Brothers of Kwanza / Mr. Braxton
This is an African-American male support group. The major focus of the group is to empower, African-American males to succeed academically, educationally, professionally and socially. The support group is designed to address issues, problems and solutions that pertain to the deteriorating status of African-American males. The group focuses on five social indicators: Education, Employment, Health and Crime & Life Expectancy
Comedy Sportz / Ms. Balistreri and Ms. Bugni
Students will use improvisation as a method to create hilarious skits and compete with other schools.
Computer Lab
Students may use the computer lab for research, reports, to catch up or work ahead on homework, or get web-based help in various subjects.
Courtyard Crew / Ms. Garcia
Mondays after school learn about horticulture and landscaping in a hands-on environment. Help to maintain the MHSA courtyard.
Debate / Ask in the main office
Debate combines competitive speaking with logic and reasoning skills. Students compete around the state and country.
Fencing Club / Mr. Wisniewski
This club gives participating students experience in the Olympic sport of fencing. Students will be instructed on the basics of sport fencing. They will compete with other clubs in the city. Open to all students. While there is no WIAA competition for fencing, this club is affiliated with the United States Fencing Association. Therefore, instruction is done according to USFA guidelines so that club students may consider regional and/or national competition.
Forensics / Ask in the main office
Forensics is a very competitive group that travels throughout the state participating in public speaking, interpretive groups and solo acting. Poetry genres are also included.
Gallery / Ms. Wojnar
MHSA students and the community artworks are displayed throughout the year.
Gospel Choir / Dr. Lobley
Students will develop their voices and other musical talents through this time honored tradition. Students will also perform at various venues within Milwaukee. Open
to all students through auditions.
Leadership Council / Principal
The Student Council and the Principal’s Cabinet have merged. This is a service organization which involves student government, school-wide & community
service projects. Members represent the student body in school activities
LUNA (Latinos Unidos eN los Artes) / Ms. Kolafa
This is a group of students that meet to celebrate and explore the culture(s) of Latinos. Activities include Latin Dance, food, music, art projects and performances for area schools.
Mural Painting / Ms. Wojnar
Students will work with Gilder Lehrman American History and Theatre to create a representative mural painting to be used in an MHSA production.
National Honor Society / Mrs. Katter
Membership is bestowed upon students in their junior or senior year.
Students must have demonstrated specific qualities including leadership, character, and scholarship. In addition, members need to show evidence of service to the school and community.
Ocean of Soul Dance Team / Mr. Lampkin
Ocean of Soul is a Hip-hop dance team that performs at various venues within the metro Milwaukee area and parts of the Midwest throughout the school year. Open to all students through auditions.
Open Dance Studio / Mr. Drews
The dance studio is open for student use. Rehearsals and choreography projects are worked on under faculty direction. Individual and special help are available. Schedule varies throughout school year.
Open Music Lab / All Music Teachers
The music theory lab is open for student use after school. Individual and special help are available. Classroom assignments and other music project may be pursued at this time.
Photography Club / Ms. Balistreri
This club meets twice a week. Students learn 35mm black & white film processing and printing. It is open to all students.
SOAR (Sisters of All Races) / Ms. Bruce-Konuah, Ms. Walton
This is a female support group that will focus on teen issues and concerns as they relate to young women. We promote self-worth, the empowerment of females, academic excellence, professional growth, and social etiquette.
Science Club / Mr. Wisniewski
The science club gives participating students the opportunity to pursue science activities beyond the classroom. Students can work on joint projects (particularly science competitions), attend field trips and meet professionals working in science and technology related fields. Science Club is intended to explore science experiences that are usually not part of conventional courses.
Tour De Force / Mr. Drews
This is the MHSA dance department touring company. It consists of advance dancers who are engaged in a city-wide performing tour from November through May. The company presents a multicultural dance program including Hispanic, African, Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Street Dance. The goal of the
company is to educate as well as entertain. Through a lecture/demonstration format, the dancers teach audiences the history and background of the dance that they perform.
Yearbook / Mr. Wszalek
The student yearbook staff assembles the “Comet”. Photos of school life and activities highlight this publication. This activity runs from September 1st through March 31st.
