The "Who I Am" production features our most advanced composition students presenting dance pieces which reflect on who they are as individuals. They base their choreography on events which have shaped their lives in some significant way.

In collaboration with the Skylight, MHSA will present a new musical work that is written, composed and designed by students of Milwaukee Public schools. This work will tour England in November where it will be workshopped with different theatre companies. In the New Year it will return to the rehearsal room for more work and then be combined with sections from England when our guests visit us in April of 2010. This is a great piece for 6th grade and up.
Raft of the Medusa

In September of 1940, a ship carrying children to Canada from the bombed cities of England was torpedoed on the high seas. This is the story of thirteen children who survived in a lifeboat and what happened during the seven days they drifted. This highly dramatic piece is appropriate for grades 6 and up.
Paint and Play Piano
November 18 @ 7 PM
This annual recital features students from the MHSA Piano and Visual Art Departments. Visual Art students create on-the-spot artwork inspired by the musical selections of the Piano Department. The audience is surrounded by original artworks and musical interpretations by the end of the evening.
Fall Band Concert

The MHSA Concert Band and Wind Ensemble perform from the 19th-21st centuries. This exciting concert also features the talents of the MHSA Jazz Big Band.

This year’s dance concert showcases faculty and guest artists choreography set on MHSA students. Included in these choreographers are four MHSA alumni. This powerful concert features, modern, ballet, tap/Swing, ballroom, African, jazz, and hip hop dance.
It’s A Wonderful Life Radio Play

In time for the holiday season, MHSA radio actors will revive this classic by Frank Capra that was dramatized for the radio in the 1940s as part of the Lux radio hour. Come and sit in our Café studio and watch and listen as the actors and sound technicians recreate this masterpiece. Music will be provided by MHSA jazz department. Refreshments will be available for purchase during the performance. It’s a perfect way to end the day and start your festivities this year. This show is perfect for the whole family.
Le Carnaval des Animaux and Noye’s Fludde

Britten’s Noye’s Fludde tells the story of Noah’s Ark. This is a culminating project for the MHSA Opera program, the only high school opera program in Wisconsin. Saint-Saens Le Carnaval des Animaux is a light-hearted look at various animals and artists using a small orchestra and featuring the MHSA Piano and Dance Majors
Jazz Bazaar

MHSA Jazz Majors are a big deal. They are such a big deal that we need to give them space. Three different venues feature every MHSA Jazz Major from the first semester of study. Audience members are encouraged to wander between venues for this concert.
Fashion Show

Original works of couture and fashion appear as the MHSA Auditorium is turned into a runway show.
Black History Program

Celebrate Black History Month with an original MHSA production. This student-created work will feature performers from all MHSA art areas.
Spring Piano Recital

Haroun and the Sea of Stories

This wonderful children’s story, told by one of the world’s greatest story tellers, was dramatized for the stage by the National Theatre of England. It tells the tale of what happens when Haroun sets out to find out why his father, Rashid, the country’s greatest storyteller, the “Shah of Blah” has lost his ability to tell stories. In a classic struggle of good over evil, light over dark, Rushdie cleverly guides us into the metaphors for the censorship that he was subjected to. This is a wonderful story for the whole family.

Student and faculty bands compete for the title of Best Band in the recent addition to the MHSA Season. Genres include rock, funk, metal, jazz, and more! Come hear the unique talents at MHSA.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra joins the MHSA Music Department in this annual event. This culminating performance marks the end of a week of artist-in-residency work at MHSA. Join us for a family-style supper before the show.

Revised, expanded, remounted and now incorporating students from our exchange school in England this piece will now transfer to our mainstage to allow more people to see it. This will be the culmination of a year long multi-cultural, international collaboration that is the first of its kind in the country.

Every year, the MHSA Jazz Department focuses a concert on the works of one composer of musical style. A guest artist works with MHSA Jazz students during the week prior to the concert. Come to this exciting evening of music.
Creative Writing Showcase

The CW majors shine in their only production of the year. Original plays, essays, short stories, and poems are the evening’s highlights. Listen to the future of American writing at the Creative Writing Showcase.
Biennial Music Festival

US Cellular Arena
Every two years, the Milwaukee Public Schools gather for the Biennial Music Festival. Students from all MPS school perform in choirs, bands, and orchestras during this special event. Tickets can be ordered in advance by calling the MPS Art and Music Office at 475-8050.
Student Dance Concerts
May 13 @ 7 PM
Levels 1 - 4 Dance Recital in the Dance Studio. Admission is free. This recital features our younger dance students performing works choreographed by the MHSA faculty. The recital shows these emerging dance artists as they progress through the MHSA Dance Curriculum.
May 14 @ 7 PM
Admission is $4 and $6. Original student choreography takes the stage in this annual tradition. Level 5 - 12 MHSA dance majors choreograph in a mixture of style. This unique concert showcases the choreographic talents of the MHSA dancers.
Jazz Finale

A year of study goes into this concert. Come listen to some of the best youth jazz in Wisconsin. All MHSA Jazz bands will perform.

Former MHSA Band students are encouraged to participate in the final Band Concert of the school year. Dust off that old trumpet or clarinet and join the band for an evening a musical fun.
