The MHSA Theatre program follows the creed of young artists working professionally. Students study all aspects of acting, scenic design, techical theatre, history, aesthetics and criticism during their MHSA career. Multiple productions in our three performance spaces allow students to apply their classroom learning in a real world environment.
Course of Study
Most students spend four years of study in the department.
In the first two years all students take a core curriculum.
Level 1 – The Ensemble
The Ensemble; Elements of The Stage; The Ensemble and Text; Elements of Design
Level 2 - History and Style
Scene Study 1 and 2; Safety, Tools and Construction; Design and Management
In the final two years of study our students can choose to specialize into performance or production or, with faculty approval, choose a combination. These classes are taught in combination with each other at respective levels.
Level 3 - Modern Masters
Advanced Acting
Advanced Scene Study – Realism and Non- Realism; Musical Theatre; Acting for the Radio ; Directing
Technical Theatre 1
Theatre Design and Technology; Sound and Film Studio Technology; Design and Management
Level 4 - Transitions
Senior Studio
Scene Study – Touring and Guest Artist; Musical Theatre; Directing Showcase; Senior Project/Recital
Technical Theatre 2
Advanced Design and Technology; Advanced Sound Film Studio Technology; Internships; Senior Project
In all levels, one day per week (usually Monday) is dedicated specifically for the purpose of academic study. During this day we study History, Aesthetics and Criticism (H.A.C).
